LEVEL AND OBJECTIVES ASSESSMENT

Following your enquiry, we will send you a quote and some initial recommendations. We will then carry out a Training Needs Analysis, to assess any prior knowledge of your chosen language and to find out what you want to achieve and the timescales involved.

The analysis is usually carried out with a questionnaire and/or a telephone interview. When training involves a large number of delegates, our Language Training Manager can offer to organise this on your site.

The aim of this pre-course assessment is to ensure we have all the information needed to group trainees according to their level and objectives, and that we design a programme which is relevant to you. The materials are then tailor-made, so that the training reflects your learning style and you acquire the skills you need in the shortest time, thereby ensuring the training is also cost-effective.

ONE-TO-ONE OR GROUP?

One-to-one courses can target the specific requirements of key members of staff. Training can be at flexible, mutually-agreed times and the rate of progress is dictated by the trainee. Group training is an option for trainees from the same company who have roughly the same needs and availability.

TRAINING FORMATS

Business Language Services (BLS) has a fully-equipped training centre in Cardiff but we can provide training at your home or office, at other UK venues.

There are four main types of training format:

Drip-feed training:
Regular, weekly training sessions of generally two hours’ duration are often ideal when there is no urgency to learn a language, especially for groups in the workplace.
Intensive courses:
A series of intensive days (6 hours per day) or a full week is good when there is a need to achieve a particular level by a certain date, perhaps because of a new export role, before a job posting abroad or as a ‘kick-start’ to a drip-feed training course. Busy managers often find it easier to blank a week from their diary and escape ringing phones to immerse themselves in the language learning process.
Semi-intensive courses:
Similar to our intensive courses but training is organised as a series of half-days (3 hour-sessions).
Immersion training, for our English as a foreign language courses:
Come and learn English in the U.K. and Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. This form of training suits those wanting to make rapid progress, because you are immersed in the British language and culture and get an immediate opportunity to practise your new skills.

Telephone “classes”. This is particularly suitable for people who have already a good command of the language and want to maintain their spoken skills in a structured format, but have limited time available to them. The teacher needs to be briefed very precisely as to what the objectives are. Conversation lasts between 15 and 30 minutes. Afterwards, the tutor prepares a summary report of common mistakes and improvement techniques, and sets some tasks for you to prepare prior to the next telephone appointment.
Language at Work – A short introduction to a modern foreign language, with a business focus – Welsh, French, German, Spanish and many more. The course is delivered over 10 hours (5 sessions) and aims to equip staff with basic meeting and greeting skills, through the study of five topics carefully chosen for their relevance in the workplace.

QUALITY CONTROL

The Language Training Manager will stay in close contact with yourself, your organisation’s training/human resources department and your appointed tutors, whatever the duration of your course. We will organise a mid-course review to make sure we are on track and that you are happy with your lessons, or iron out any issues and fine-tune anything you would like us to do differently. Any comments will be taken on board and passed on to your tutor. We will also organise an end of course questionnaire.
